When do you get a BKR registration?

4 people examining BKR records

You get a BKR registration if you borrow or can stand in the red for more than 250 euros, and this obligation runs for more than 1 month. This includes revolving credit, private lease, "buy now, pay later" schemes, credit cards, phone subscriptions with handset, and mortgage arrears. Almost every adult in the Netherlands has a BKR registration, which does not automatically mean you have payment problems.

When do you not get a BKR registration?

Basically, any loan over 250 euros will get you a BKR registration. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Mortgages: if you take out a mortgage, you will not get a BKR registration. But beware: if you are in arrears by 3 or more monthly installments, you will receive a negative BKR registration for this.
  • Student loans from DUO: students who borrow from DUO to pay for their studies do not receive a BKR registration for this. However, they are required to disclose their student loans if they want to take out a mortgage, for example.
  • Loans from family or friends: if you borrow money from family or friends, it is not registered by the BKR.

When to get a positive BKR registration?

If you borrow for more than 250 euros, you will get a BKR registration. This is then always a positive BKR registration. This applies to all loans except those described above under "When don't you get a BKR registration?".

A positive BKR registration means that you are registered as someone who is good at meeting their payment obligations. Financial institutions see your positive BKR registration and will label you as trustworthy as a result. A positive BKR registration does not have negative consequences. However, such a registration can affect the loan amount if, for example, you want to take out a mortgage. The mortgage lender can then see that you have other charges and can adjust the maximum mortgage amount you can get accordingly.

When to get a negative BKR registration?

A positive BKR registration turns into a negative BKR registration when a code is placed behind it. Such a code is placed behind your registration the moment you fail to meet your payment obligations.

There are different types of negative BKR registrations. These are indicated by different BKR codes (for example, A Code: A1, A2, A3 and H codes) . For example, if you have a loan on which you are in arrears, you will get the code A after your BKR registration. This is also when your positive registration changes to a negative registration. An H code is a recovery code. If you manage to catch up on arrears, this recovery is reported to the BKR. When fully paid off, an end date is also posted.

How do I get rid of a negative registration?

Do you have a negative BKR registration? If you have paid off your debt, this negative registration will remain visible in BKR for five years. More information on how long a BKR registration remains can be found on our page BKR registration: how long do I stay registered?

If you want to remove your BKR registration before the five-year period has expired, Dynamite will help you do so. That way you will no longer have to contend with the negative consequences of your registration.
