How a BKR registration with ICS comes about:
A BKR registration arises when you take out a credit or loan of €250 or more. In such a case, the provider of the credit is obliged to report this to the BKR, or Bureau Krediet Registratie.
The BKR keeps a record of these credits, loans and debts of every Dutch person. Future lenders can see this record when you apply for a mortgage or loan, for example, to assess how financially sound you are. Such a record remains visible for five years, even after the full original amount has been repaid.
This is why an ICS BKR registration from the past can still stand in the way of your new mortgage for a long time .
ICS card and BKR
The most obvious establishment of an ICS BKR, is the use of an ICS credit card. When you pay for something with a credit card, you are in effect buying on credit. Therefore, credit card purchases over €250 also fall under the debts registered by the BKR.
Indeed, even only a spending limit above €250 on your ICS card is registered with BKR. After all, even without using this, you do in fact have a €250 credit with ICS, which must therefore be registered with BKR.
If you do not actually use this credit, or always make the payments on time, there is then a positive BKR registration. In this, there is not so much to worry about. Does a payment arrears accumulate when paying off credit card debt? Then this becomes a negative BKR registration with ICS, which often does have negative consequences on your ability to get a mortgage.
ICS spread payments and BKR
Using spread payments with ICS can also result in BKR registration. In that case, you have chosen to repay an outstanding debt (the credit used on your card) in instalments. Does this involve a total amount of €250? Then this is already registered anyway.
Are you unable to pay multiple installments? Then you will face a negative BKR registration with ICS.
The danger of spread payments is that people underestimate how much debt they still have outstanding, causing them to get into trouble. Partly for this reason, ICS has decided to discontinue the option of requesting spread payments on its cards.
