BKR codes: complete explanation from A to Z

Is your financial life at a standstill because of a BKR code? A BKR code is a special notation in your credit report that indicates there have been payment problems. The system uses codes such as A (delinquency), H (recovery), and numbers 1 through 5 to indicate different situations. An “A” code is assigned after just two months of delinquency on installment loans. The impact varies: an “A” with an “H” code is relatively mild and sometimes still acceptable for mortgages, while an “A3” or “A4” code blocks virtually all financing options.

You’re not alone in this situation. With nearly 11.7 million registered loans, 5% of which have a negative code, we understand that it can be frustrating when you’re trying to get a mortgage, a loan, or even a cell phone plan. We’ll walk you through the world of BKR codes so you’ll know exactly what those mysterious codes on your BKR statement mean and what you can do about them.

Key insights

  • A code indicates a payment delinquency: The base code assigned after 2–4 months of payment arrears
  • Seven different coding systems: From A to H, plus the numbers 1–5 for specific situations
  • Impact varies by code: A with H is sometimes acceptable; A3/A4 blocks almost everything
  • Five-year registration period: Standard term, but legally often subject to earlier removal
  • Legal assistance is effective: Early removal is often possible under the GDPR and through a balancing of interests

What exactly is a BKR code?

A BKR code is more than just a letter or number in your credit report. It is a special indicator that alerts lenders to past payment problems with a loan. Whereas a regularBKR entry is neutral and simply indicates that you have a loan, a code is viewed as a negative signal.

The credit flag isn’t assigned arbitrarily. For term loans, such as personal loans, you’ll receive a credit flag after two months of delinquency. For revolving credit and mortgages, this happens after three months, and for other financial obligations, after four months if the amount exceeds 250 euros. Important to know: According to BKR regulations, your lender must first send you a preliminary notice. This warning gives you one more chance to catch up on your payments before the negative entry is actually recorded.

The system distinguishes between different types of issues. Each code tells lenders a specific story about what has happened with your loan. A simple “A” with no further qualification means there is a delinquency but no further escalation yet. An “A2,” on the other hand, indicates that the entire loan has been called in, which is a much more serious situation.

What BKR codes are there?

The BKR uses seven different codes, each of which represents a specific situation. We’ll walk you through them all, from the most common to the most serious.

Code A: Backlog Coding

TheA code is the base code and indicates a payment arrears. You receive this code when you are behind on your payments for a certain period. Without any additional special codes, this means there are arrears but no escalation—such as a demand for payment or a write-off—has yet occurred. This is the most common and relatively least severe code you can receive.

Code H: recovery encoding

TheH code stands for “recovery” and is assigned when a previously reported delinquency has been fully cleared while the loan is still active. This code is assigned only to active loans. Once the loan has been fully repaid, an end date is recorded instead. Both the A and H codes remain visible for five years from the date of recovery.

Code 1: Payment Plan

Code 1 is assigned when, after falling behind on payments, you have reached a payment or repayment agreement with the lender. This code is always combined with an A code up toA1 and indicates that you are actively taking steps to catch up on your arrears according to an agreed-upon schedule.

Code 2: Claim

Code 2 is assigned when the lender declares the remaining loan amount fully due and payable and demands immediate repayment. This usually occurs when payment arrangements are not honored or the delinquency escalates further. In the event of a demand for payment, a collection agency or bailiff is almost always engaged. This code, also known asA2, is considered a more severe classification.

Code 3: Write-off or Waiver

Code 3 is assigned when an amount of 250 euros or more is written off or forgiven by the lender. This can occur in the case of a final discharge through a settlement agreement, in debt restructuring programs such as WSNP or MSNP where part of the debt is forgiven, or in the case of an internal write-off when the claim is deemed uncollectible.

Code 4: Unreachable

Code 4 is assigned when, as a consumer, you are unreachable by the lender for an extended period of time. This happens, for example, when your home or residential address is unknown and you do not respond to payment reminders or collection attempts. This code is considered one of the most severe classifications.

Code 5: Preventive Payment Plan

Code 5 is specifically placed on mortgage credit when you and the lender agree on a written preventive arrangement of at least four months to avoid payment problems before actual arrears occur.

Combinations of BKR codes and their impact

In practice, codes often appear in combinations. Specificity codes 1 through 5 are always paired with an A code or an H code. Below, you can see what the most common combinations mean for your situation.

An A1 code indicates that you are behind on payments but have made arrangements to catch up. This is considered a relatively mild classification because you are taking steps to resolve the issue. Lenders view this more leniently than other codes.

An A2 classification means that your lender has demanded payment of the entire outstanding balance. This is a severe classification that makes it very difficult to obtain new loans. Virtually no bank accepts customers with this classification without a very good explanation.

TheA3 combination indicates that part of your debt has been written off or forgiven. This is a very serious designation that almost always leads to the rejection of new credit applications. It signals to lenders that you have been unable to repay the full amount of the debt.

An A4 classification is considered the most severe credit rating. There isn’t a single bank in the Netherlands that will accept a customer with an A4 rating, not even with a plausible explanation. This rating indicates that you are not only behind on payments but are also unreachable by the lender.

An "AH" classification means that you were behind on payments but have fully caught up while the loan is still active. This is the least severe classification, but it will remain on your record for five years.

“Many people are alarmed when they discover they have a BKR code. They often don’t even know exactly what code they have or what it means for their financial future. Knowledge really is power here: if you understand what code you have, you can take targeted steps to improve your situation.”

Impact on Your Financial Situation

The impact of BKR codes on your financial options is significant and varies depending on the type of code. Not all codes carry the same weight, and banks assess them differently. A single “A” code with an “H” recovery code may be viewed by somemortgage lenders under certain conditions. However, an A2 or A3 code virtually blocks all mortgage options.

The severity of classifications generally ranges from A with H—the least severe variant, which is sometimes acceptable—through A1 with H, which is relatively mild and sometimes acceptable under certain conditions, to A2 with an expiration date, which is severe and almost always leads to rejection. A3 with an expiration date is very severe and almost always results in rejection, and A4 is the most severe, resulting in categorical rejection.

Credit scores for mortgages carry more weight than those for personal loans, because mortgage payments are considered the primary financial obligation. Banks view a delinquency on your mortgage as a much more serious red flag than, for example, a delinquency on a credit card.

The consequences of a BKR code extend beyond just mortgages. You may also encounter problems when signing up for cell phone plans that include a device, or whenleasing a car, taking out insurance policies, getting a credit card, or securing business financing if you’re an entrepreneur. Even renting an apartment can become more difficult when landlords run a credit check.

How do you get rid of your BKR code?

If you want to regain your financial freedom, there are several ways to clear your BKR records. The first step is always torequest your credit report through the BKR website. Check to make sure all the information is correct. If you find an error, you can contact the relevant lender directly to have it corrected.

You can file an objection to your registration yourself if you believe it is unjustified or no longer proportionate. To do so, send a written objection to the lender explaining why you believe the registration should be removed and what personal interest you have in this matter. Examples include a specific plan to buy a home or the need for a business loan.

If you’re unable to make any progress on your own, seeking legal assistance is often more effective. Specialists such as Dynamiet Nederland have in-depth knowledge of both the BKR system and relevant legislation, such as the GDPR. They can draft a legally sound objection that carries much more weight. They strike the right balance between the lender’s interests and your personal interests. If necessary, they can initiate legal proceedings if the lender refuses to cooperate.

According to the BKR regulations, a code remains on record for five years by default. This period begins upon registration of the “H” recovery code for active loans or on the actual end date of the loan if it has been fully repaid. However, there is some legal leeway here. This five-year period does not stem from legislation but from the BKR regulations. According to the GDPR and recent case law, this period may not be applied automatically. Lenders must always weigh their own interest in enforcing the rule against your interest in restoring your creditworthiness on a case-by-case basis.

The likelihood of success varies depending on the type of coding. An A with an H may be relatively easy to remove; an A2 coding is more difficult; and an A3 or A4 is very difficult but not impossible. Each situation requires a specific approach, in which personal circumstances play a major role.

We often see people stuck in this situation for years because of a BKR code that is no longer proportionate. In recent years, case law has made it increasingly clear that the consumer’s interest in rebuilding their life can outweigh the lender’s interest in maintaining the record. That is precisely the legal loophole that specialists use to help people.
