What does a BKR code 3 mean?

A BKR code 3, also known as an A3 code, means that there has been a payment delinquency in which the lender has written off or forgiven at least €250. This record remains visible in the BKR registry for 5 years, even after the debt has been fully settled. The code indicates that the lender has written off part of the debt as a loss.

We understand how frustrating it can be to deal with this kind of credit record. It may feel as though your financial future is on hold for years. Fortunately, there are more options than you might think. At Dynamiet Nederland, we’ve already helped hundreds of people get back on their feet financially, despite—or even without—their BKR code 3.

How exactly is a BKR Code 3 generated?

The Credit Registration Bureau keeps track of all the loans, credits, and debts you’ve taken on. As long as you make your payments on time, your record will be positive. But what happens if things go wrong?

If you fall more than 60 days behind on a payment, you will first receive an “A” code. This stands for “Arrears Notification.” Your lender is then required to report this to the BKR. At that point, you still have several options to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The situation changes when your lender decides to write off part of the debt. This often happens when they determine that full repayment is no longer realistic. They then write off at least €250 as a loss. At that point, your A code changes to an A3 code, or a BKR code 3.

What does a Code 3 mean for you?

A BKR code 3 has far-reaching consequences for your financial options. Lenders view this code as a serious red flag. It tells them that a substantial amount was written off in the past because repayment was not possible.

Taking out new loans will become practically impossible. Banks and other lenders will almost always reject your application. You will also no longer be eligible for a mortgage. Even signing up for a cell phone plan with a device or renting a car could become problematic.

“Many people think that once they’re under a code 3, they can’t take any financial steps for years. But there are more options than you might think. We’ve already helped hundreds of people who thought their situation was hopeless.”

The most frustrating thing is often that the record remains on file for five years, even if you’ve since paid off the debt in full. This means that years later, you may still be feeling the effects of a financially difficult period that’s long since passed.

Ways to get rid of a BKR Code 3

Although a Code 3 is a persistent record, there are definitely ways to have it removed. The first step is always to request your BKR record and review it carefully.

Is the record incorrect? If so, you can file an objection with the BKR. This could include situations where the amount written off was less than €250, the record has been on file for more than 5 years, or the debt wasn’t yours to begin with. In these cases, you have a good chance of having the record removed.

Even if the registration is technically correct, there may still be legal options available. Sometimes the original claim is time-barred, or the lender has made procedural errors. A legal specialist can assess whether there are grounds for action in your situation.

At Dynamiet Nederland, we have years of experience in removing BKR records. We’re familiar with all possible approaches and know exactly which arguments work best in each situation. Where others give up, we often still find ways forward.
