Senior loan with BKR: financial freedom in later life

Borrowing with BKR

You have worked and saved your entire life. Now that you are retired, you want to enjoy yourself. That camper for traveling around Europe, making your home more sustainable so that your energy bill goes down, or a financial buffer for unexpected healthcare costs. But then a BKR registration from the past throws a spanner in the works.

Frustrating. Because that registration says nothing about who you are now.

A record from another life

Most BKR registrations among seniors originate from a completely different stage of life. A period of unemployment ten years ago. A divorce that threw finances off balance for a while. A business venture that did not turn out as hoped.

Now everything is different. You have a steady income from your state pension and retirement pension that comes in every month. Your mortgage is paid off or almost paid off. Your fixed expenses are lower than ever. Your financial life has become predictable and stable.

But what about that record? It will continue to haunt you. For five years, starting from the moment you paid off the debt in full. Not from the moment the problems arose.

“A 68-year-old senior citizen came to us with a BKR registration of a payment arrears from 2019. This arose during his divorce and had long since been paid off. He wanted to make his home more sustainable but was rejected everywhere. His current situation was stable: state pension, good retirement pension, paid-off house. That registration was no longer in proportion to his actual financial position.”

Why banks still say no

Lenders are legally required to perform a BKR check for loans above €250. They see your registration and follow their standard procedure: rejection. Not because they look at your current situation, but because that's how the system works.

This is particularly harsh for seniors. You are precisely the group that lenders view as a stable target group. Pensions and state pensions are predictable sources of income. There is no longer any risk of job loss. Major financial surprises are rare at this age.

But the system makes no distinction. A registration is a registration, regardless of how stable your life is now.

The alternatives and their downsides

There are lenders who specialize in loans for seniors with a BKR registration. They exist, and sometimes they offer a solution. But be aware of the disadvantages.

Higher interest rates. Specialized lenders charge more because they take on more risk. The difference can amount to several percent per year. For a five-year loan of €15,000, this can quickly add up to hundreds of euros extra.

Limited amounts. The maximum loan amounts are often lower than at regular banks. Just when you want to make a larger investment, you run into limits.

Stricter conditions. Shorter terms, higher monthly payments, less flexibility. Not ideal if you live on a fixed pension.

Then there is equity release, where you tap into the surplus value of your home. You receive money without having to make monthly repayments. It sounds perfect, but you are eating into your assets. Assets that you may still need for future healthcare costs. Or that you wanted to leave to your children.

And borrowing from family? For many seniors, becoming dependent on their children for a loan at the age of 70 does not feel right. Not to mention the fact that money matters can cause tension within families.

Waiting five years is not an option.

For younger people, waiting five years is annoying but manageable. For seniors, it's different. If you're 67 and want to enjoy your retirement, you don't want to wait until you're 72 before you can buy that camper. The years you have now are precious.

Furthermore, why wait when that registration may not need to remain in place at all?

When can a BKR registration be removed?

In the Santander ruling, the Supreme Court ruled that BKR registrations must be proportionate. This means that the impact of the registration on your life must be reasonably proportionate to the original debt and the circumstances.

This is particularly relevant for seniors. You can have your registration removed if:

  • The original deficit arose due to temporary circumstances such as dismissal, illness, or divorce.
  • You have paid off the debt in full
  • Your current financial situation is demonstrably stable
  • Registration hinders you in matters that are important to your quality of life.
  • Errors were made during registration or you were not correctly informed.

The third and fourth conditions are often decisive for seniors. Your situation is stable. And the obstacle is real: you cannot invest in your home, make purchases that would make your retirement more enjoyable, or create the financial space you need.

“Seniors often have the strongest case for BKR removal. Their income is stable and predictable, their expenses are low, and their financial situation is clear. An old registration from a turbulent period stands in stark contrast to this. Judges and lenders see this too.”

How does BKR removal work?

The process begins with an analysis of your specific situation. Dynamiet Nederland reviews your registration, the circumstances in which it arose, and your current financial position. Based on this, an assessment is made as to whether there are legal grounds for removal.

If this is the case, the lender who placed the registration will be contacted. In many cases, this leads to removal without the need for legal action. If the lender does not cooperate, legal proceedings may be initiated.

The result? No more registration. Access to normal financing, under normal conditions. No higher interest rates, no limited amounts, no dependence on specialized providers or family members.

Enjoy your retirement without financial constraints

You have worked your entire life. You are entitled to a retirement in which you can do whatever you want, without any past records holding you back.

The question is not whether there are alternatives to borrowing with a BKR registration. There are. The question is whether you are willing to accept more expensive solutions and longer waiting times, when that registration may not need to remain in place at all.

Request a free analysis and find out within 24 hours whether your BKR registration can be removed. So you can enjoy the financial freedom you deserve.
