The alternatives and their downsides
There are lenders who specialize in loans for seniors with a BKR registration. They exist, and sometimes they offer a solution. But be aware of the disadvantages.
Higher interest rates. Specialized lenders charge more because they take on more risk. The difference can amount to several percent per year. For a five-year loan of €15,000, this can quickly add up to hundreds of euros extra.
Limited amounts. The maximum loan amounts are often lower than at regular banks. Just when you want to make a larger investment, you run into limits.
Stricter conditions. Shorter terms, higher monthly payments, less flexibility. Not ideal if you live on a fixed pension.
Then there is equity release, where you tap into the surplus value of your home. You receive money without having to make monthly repayments. It sounds perfect, but you are eating into your assets. Assets that you may still need for future healthcare costs. Or that you wanted to leave to your children.
And borrowing from family? For many seniors, becoming dependent on their children for a loan at the age of 70 does not feel right. Not to mention the fact that money matters can cause tension within families.
