Riverty BKR registration: What you need to know about retroactive payments

pay later

Does paying afterwards through Riverty (formerly AfterPay) cause BKR registration? We often get this question at Dynamite Netherlands. The answer is nuanced and depends on several factors. In this complete guide, we explain when Riverty is or is not registered with BKR, what the risks are and what changes are coming in the future.

If you store online regularly, chances are you're familiar with Riverty as a payment option. This popular "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) service lets you make purchases without paying immediately. But what does this mean for your financial records and possible BKR registration?

What is Riverty and how does retroactive payment work?

Riverty is the new name of AfterPay, one of the largest providers of after-payment services in the Netherlands. The company offers several payment options:

  • Standard late payment: You get 14 to 30 days to pay for your purchase, with no interest or additional fees for timely payment.
  • Paying in installments: You can pay for your purchase in three installments spread over 90 days. This too is interest-free, but requires more financial planning.
  • Riverty Flex: This is a revolving credit facility where you pay a fixed monthly fee and can bundle multiple purchases. This option is most similar to traditional credit.

The popularity of these services has skyrocketed, with 17% growth by 2024 alone. Young people and people with limited financial reserves especially like to use this low-threshold payment method.

"Many people don't realize that different payment options at Riverty can have different impacts on your financial future. A small payment problem can sometimes impact your borrowing options for years."

Is Riverty registered with the BKR?

This is where it gets interesting. The current situation (early 2025) is as follows:

  • Standard payment in arrears (14-30 days) is currently not registered with the BKR. This is the most widely used option and a major reason why many consumers choose Riverty. So you can pay in arrears without it affecting your BKR status, as long as you pay on time.
  • When paying in installments (over 90 days), the situation is similar: no BKR registration with normal use. But beware: once you have long-term payment arrears (longer than 120 days), Riverty may still proceed to report you to BKR in some cases.
  • Different rules apply to Riverty Flex. Because it is more similar to traditional credit, this option may well lead to BKR registration. This looks at the total amount outstanding and the length of any arrears.

One important detail: Riverty does not currently perform a BKR check before they authorize you to pay in arrears. This makes it approachable, but also increases the risk of overcrediting if you accumulate debt with multiple BNPL services at the same time.

Future changes: BKR registration starting in 2026

The current rules are about to change fundamentally. The European Union has adopted the Consumer Credit Directive II (CCD2), which will take effect in the Netherlands no later than Nov. 20, 2026. This directive has major implications for retrospective payment services such as Riverty.

From then on:

  • Do all BNPL providers fall under the Financial Supervision Act
  • Should they apply for an AFM license
  • Are they required to do a credit check including BKR check
  • Should they register all forms of credit with BKR

There is still discussion about the limit amount from which a BNPL transaction must be registered. The proposed amount is €250, but the AFM has warned that 90% of problematic transactions fall below this amount. Therefore, the regulator advocates a lower amount.

These changes mean that starting in late 2026, you will have to be much more careful about using after-the-fact payment services if you have plans for a mortgage or other loans. What doesn't have a BKR impact now may affect your borrowing options in the future.

The risk of blacklisting in payment problems

In addition to the BKR, there are also commercial "blacklists" that you as a consumer can end up on if you have payment problems with Riverty. These are often less transparent than the BKR.

The main commercial registrations are:

  • Focum: Used by web shops, energy companies and telecom providers
  • Preventel: Specifically for the telecom sector
  • EDR Credit Services: For insurers and lenders

The disturbing thing about this is that often you don't even know you are registered. You discover it only when you are turned down for a phone subscription, car lease or loan. An unpaid Riverty bill of a few tens can thus have consequences for years.

Unlike the BKR registration system, these commercial listings do not automatically notify you of your registration. You have to actively request inspection from these organizations yourself to check if you are registered.

If you are experiencing problems with rejections and suspect it is due to an unjustified registration, we at Dynamite Netherlands can help you gain access and challenge unjustified registrations.

What happens if Riverty has payment problems?

Imagine this: you made a purchase through Riverty, but you forgot or can't make the payment on time. What happens next?

Since the introduction of the BNPL Code of Conduct in October 2023, this procedure has become clearer:

  • Step 1: You will receive at least one free payment reminder before collection fees are charged.
  • Step 2: Persistent late payments are followed by reminders with collection fees, which have been capped since the Code of Conduct.
  • Step 3: After about 60-90 days, your file may be forwarded to a collection agency.
  • Step 4: For arrears longer than 120 days, BKR registration may follow in some cases (depending on the type of Riverty service).

An important bright spot: Riverty signed the NVVK Covenant on Amicable Debt Relief in June 2024. This means that if you are in debt assistance, there is an 8-month debt collection freeze. Riverty also agrees in advance to amicable debt arrangements.

If you run into trouble with Riverty payments, it is important to contact both Riverty and possibly a debt counselor or legal advisor quickly. The sooner you take action, the less likely you are to suffer long-term financial consequences.

Legal options in case of BKR registration by Riverty

If you do have a BKR coding obtained due to problems with Riverty, there are legal options to challenge it. This can be done in several situations:

  1. Wrongful registrations due to administrative errors: For example, if you have returned products but Riverty continues to claim them, or if incorrect amounts or persons are registered.
  2. Disputed claims Where the debt is not certain: If there is uncertainty about whether you received the products or if there are disputes about the quality of products.
  3. Rightful but disproportionately burdensome registrations: Based on the Santander ruling, BKR registrations can sometimes be removed if the negative impact on you is disproportionate to the importance of registration. Consider small debts with big implications for your mortgage.

At Dynamite Netherlands, we have extensive experience in challenging BKR registrations, including those arising from retrospective payment services. Our specialists can assess your situation and recommend the best course of action.

We see that especially for small amounts that led to BKR registration, the balance of interests often tips in favor of the consumer. A registration for an unpaid €50 bill that prevents you from buying a house is often disproportionate and can be legally challenged.

It is important to note that not every registration can be removed. For clearly culpable behavior such as prolonged refusal to pay without a valid reason, the chances of successful removal are slim.
