A BKR code 3, also known as an A3 code, means there is a late payment and a portion of the debt of €250 or more has been written off or discharged. This coding remains visible on the BKR register for five years, even after the debt is settled.
This coding exists to indicate what is going on with a late payment (identified by the code "A" of "Late Payment Notification").
The origins of a BKR code 3
The BKR - Bureau of Credit Registration - keeps a record of credits, loans and debts a person has taken out.
As long as the repayments continue to be made on time, this is a so-called positive registration. Do you fall behind on loan repayments and take too long to catch up? Then this is converted into a negative registration.
This results in an "A" after the credit. This code A stands for "arrears notification."
To indicate what else is going on with that arrears, the BKR uses a number of particularity codes. The 3-code is one of them.
